Sustanix is a Dutch deeptech chemistry startup developing novel bio-based polymers and formulations by valorising biomass to replace microplastic, synthetic chemicals, and PFAS in coatings, personal care, and water treatment.

Role Overview

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented candidate to support research and development activities in microbiology and fermentation chemistry. The role involves assisting in microbial culture studies, fermentation process optimization, analytical testing, and laboratory documentation. The ideal candidate should possess a strong scientific foundation, hands-on laboratory skills, and an eagerness to contribute to innovation in bioprocessing and microbial applications.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct microbiological experiments including microbial isolation, culturing, staining, and characterization.

• Assist in fermentation process development, optimization, and scale-up activities.

• Monitor fermentation parameters such as pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen, and nutrient utilization.

• Perform routine analytical testing using standard laboratory instruments and techniques.

• Prepare media, reagents, and maintain microbial cultures under aseptic conditions.

• Support quality control and compliance with laboratory safety and SOP guidelines.

• Maintain laboratory equipment and ensure cleanliness and calibration standards.

Required Qualification

Master’s degree or PhD in:

  • Microbiology
  • Biotechnology
  • Biochemistry
  • Fermentation Technology
  • Chemical Engineering (with biotechnology/bioprocess specialization)
  • Or related life science disciplines

Preferred Skills & Competencies

• Basic understanding of microbial physiology and fermentation principles.

• Familiarity with aseptic techniques and laboratory safety procedures.

• Knowledge of bioreactors, fermentation systems, and analytical methods is preferred.

• Ability to work independently as well as in a collaborative team environment.

Experience

• 0–2 years of laboratory or industrial experience in microbiology, biotechnology, or fermentation-related fields.

• Internship or academic project experience in fermentation or microbial research will be an added advantage.
